What is Anger and how to Manage Anger Effectively

Do you feel irritated when your dog jumps on you with excitement? Do you find yourself honking furiously at other drivers because they are driving the speed limit? Do you feel agitated when something does not go your way or someone challenges you?
If you answered yes to all three of the above questions, you may have anger issues that can be detrimental to your mental and physical health, relationships, professional life and other important areas of your life.

Anger is a natural emotion, a response to a perceived threat to us and our surroundings. It is a survival instinct that warns us of threat and danger, launching us into defensive/protection mode.

Many deem anger as a negative emotion because it causes upset and distress, however, when anger is handled properly it prompts us to make positive changes, motivates us to speak up and correct injustices. On the other hand, mismanaged anger – unresolved and/or, uncontrolled is counter-productive which leads to problems with health, family/friends and work.

Anger affects our emotional and physiological well-being; when we are angry, stress hormones are released such as adrenaline, non-adrenaline, and cortisol; heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and breathing rate increases.

Everyone reacts differently to anger, some respond with aggression while others remain calm. The three most common approaches to responding to anger are expressing, suppressing and managing anger. A healthy approach to express anger is to stay composed, be respectful, and clearly communicate our thoughts and emotions. Suppression can mean internalizing, ignoring or avoiding the irritation altogether. When anger is suppressed, it inhibits the natural expression of a negative emotion, causing it to turn inward and negatively manifesting our physical, mental, and emotional health. The best way to manage anger is to: acknowledge it as a normal emotion; be mindful of the change in emotions; and carefully make a rational choice that will improve the situation and how you feel.

Anger management is the process of acquiring the skills to recognize triggers that make us react. It is also the process of learning how to handle a frustrating situation in a positive, constructive manner.
Calming anger is a mindfulness based practice that allows you to be acutely aware of your feelings and behaviours and transform them for your benefit. and allowing the impulsiveness to subside.

Anger Management Tips:

Practicing these techniques daily will commit them to your subconscious mind and you will learn to use them automatically when dealing with stress or anger.

Deep Breathing and Anchoring a word/phrase like “relax” or “I feel calm and in control” when breathing.

Calming Imagery – Using creative visualization recall/create a scene/positive experience that relaxes you.

Change your perception – Practicing using a logical approach (when triggered) helps create a new, constructive habit (to manage anger).

Be aware of your language –Nothing is always ‘always wrong’ or ‘never right’ . Practice seeing things in their true perspective.

Expand your awareness – Observe how you interact with people and deal with challenging situations.
